Fréjus has preserved a large number of monuments from its past. Indeed, with 2,000 years of history, this City of Art and History in the Var region boasts a significant historical and architectural heritage. The Roman remains are the oldest traces of its past and consist of an amphitheater, a theater, and an aqueduct, of which a few pillars and arcades remain. Dating from the end of the 1st century, the arenas could accommodate nearly 12,000 spectators who came to watch gladiatorial combats! In the old town, the Episcopal group of Fréjus, built between the 5th and 16th centuries, is also part of this remarkable heritage. It includes the beautiful Saint-Léonce Cathedral, with a Romanesque-style bell tower and two naves connected by several arcades. But also the octagonal baptistery dating from the 5th century, one of the oldest in France, the episcopal palace transformed into a town hall, as well as the Romanesque cloister, whose wooden ceiling was decorated with real or imaginary figures and animals. The archaeological museum adjoining the cloister houses remarkable ancient sculpted pieces from excavations carried out in the Roman city.
From Fréjus train station: 21 minutes by car.
